Visiting Hartford, Connecticut

Science, Museums & the Old State House

Find your favorite activity in Connecticut’s capital city. Divide your attention between New England historic sites and state of the art science centers and museums.

Whether you’re on vacation with the family, or exploring Hartford on a romantic getaway – Hartford has what you’re looking for.

Traveling with children? Be sure to visit the Connecticut Science Center for family fun in this nine-story, 154,000-square-foot, $165 million museum.

The Connecticut Science Center was designed by César Pelli & Associates in 2009 – and is a Gold Level, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certified structure.

Kids will love the 3D theater – known as the Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation Science Theater – showcasing fun films with topics like dinosaurs, extreme weather, and underwater creatures. Don’t miss permanent exhibits like Forces in Motion, Sports Lab, KidSpace – a spot for the extra little ones.

Plenty more museums are found in Hartford. Explore the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art – the country’s oldest public art museum. Look for this stunning castle-structure in downtown Hartford – and once you’ve found it, you won’t be surprised to hear it first opened in 1844.

Wadsworth houses works of American and, of course, French Impressionism, modernist and contemporary art, and early examples American decorative arts. Explore the Wadsworth Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more historic sites in Hartford, discover the Old State House – first completed in 1796. The Old State House is home to both the Joseph Steward Museum of Curiosities, and the Old State House Farmers’ Market. Enjoy a guided or self-guided tour, or take a load off at the many conversation spots throughout the museum.

Children are welcome, and entertained at the Old State House – so let the kids loose in the hands-on activity areas, or grab them an activity backpack, courtesy of the museum.

Education is the name of the game in Hartford, so enjoy your time in castle-like art museums, state-of-the-art discovery centers, and historic state houses.
