Central Connecticut State University

Originally founded in 1849, Central Connecticut State University also acts as Connecticut's oldest publicly funded university. Today, this school near Hartford offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to over 11,000 students.

Personalized education at the school ensures a small student to faculty ratio as students work to complete degrees in businesses, education, engineering, biology, computer science, and more.

Sports fans won't want to miss games featuring the Central Connecticut Blue Devils. Popular sports include basketball for men and women at William H. Detrick Stadium, football at Arute Field, and baseball at CCSU Baseball Field.

Museum of Natural and Other Curiosities

Many of those who visit Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, enjoy tours of the Old State House right in historic downtown. And while tours of this iconic and important building can yield unique insights into the history of Colonial America and Hartford, it's what you'll find on the top floor that'll have you dropping your jaw in amazement.

The Museum of Natural and Other Curiosities is a fun-for-all-ages destination housing a wide range of unique and off-the-wall artifacts. Rare and exotic stuffed birds line the walls, with an eight-foot alligator dangling nearby; the two headed pig should draw interest, and giant lobster claw often draws ooh's and ahh's.

Penwood State Park

Outdoor recreation in the state of Connecticut is a wide open landscape of vibrant and thrilling choices. No matter where you visit in the state, and no matter the season, you'll find an impressive list of things to see and do. Plan your next visit to CT and head for the town of Bloomfield, home to Penwood State Park, just one of the many exceptional parks in the state.

Sprawled across 787 acres in the west-central region of the state, Penwood SP is an easy drive in from nearby Hartford. The entirety of Penwood SP is found across the Talcott Mountain range – bold explorers can make the trek across the Metacomet Trail, which spans the length of the trail.

Trinity College

Founded in 1823, Trinity College is the second-oldest college in Connecticut, after Yale. A private liberal arts college located in Hartford, Trinity offers its 2,300 students the choice of over 35 majors and 25 minors.

The college features a personalized education with a small student to faculty ratio of 10:1 and offers its visitors postcard-worthy shots of its beautiful Collegiate Gothic architecture, which was one of the earliest examples of its type built in the country.

As the Trinity Bantams, the school's athletic division competes in 29 varsity sports in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). See the football team in action at Jessee/Miller Field or catch a game/race featuring the championship-winning baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, and lacrosse teams.

Local Area Recreation Opportunities

  • 2 mile(s) from Riverside Park, The park was established in 1895, with a total of seventy five acres purchased by the City of Hartford. The park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers. Park Superintendent Theodore Wirth developed a design for the southern portion of the park in 1904, which called for the development of additional active recreation equipment from the wading pool to the south end of the park. The Park was officially named Riverside Park in March of 1897 by the Park Board and was opened to the public on Sep 1898.
  • 3 mile(s) from Pope Park, On November 26th, 1894 Colonel Albert A. Pope provided in his will a gift to the City of 73.0 acres of parkland. Two additional acres were then added from Hartford real estate. In 1897, the City finished purchasing additional southern tracts of land bringing the total acreage to 90 acres. Fourteen acres adjacent to the park were also allocated by the City for juvenile and orphan asylums.
  • 4 mile(s) from Keney Park, This 694 acre park includes 584 acres in Hartford and 110 acres in Windsor. Keney Park is the largest park within the city system, providing not only neighborhood recreation in a historic designed landscape, but also ecologically rich environments.
  • 3 mile(s) from Goodwin Park, This 37 acre park shows a grand meadow framed by tree plantations with individual trees and small clusters within the meadow space, and a small water feature.
  • 3 mile(s) from Elizabeth Park, On August 30, 1894 the will of Former Parks Commissioner Charles H. Pond set aside, as a gift to the City of Hartford, about 90 acres in the Northwest section of the township. The original design, by Theodore Wirth, dates to 1900. The famous Rose Garden was created under Wirth's design and guidance beginning in 1903
  • 2 mile(s) from Bushnell Park, The Park was one of the earliest public parks in the nation to be planned and built by a municipality as a graceful pastoral landscape rather than a formal European garden or New England square. It has been an important gathering place, recreation ground and green city space for over 130 years. Perhaps as important, the park serves as the landscape setting for the State Capital. The park was listed on the national Register of Historic Places on October 22, 1970
