See These Eight CT Roadside Attractions

As you make your way through Connecticut, exploring the charming towns and historic sites, be sure to make it a point to visit these unique roadside attractions. From exotic oddities to the American impressionist artwork found at Weir Farm NHS – enjoy your visit to Connecticut.

1. The Glass House

Truly a must-visit attraction in Connecticut, The Glass House is, as it sounds, a house made of glass. On one hand, it's a sterling example of minimalist design, concept, and spacial proportions. On the other hand, it's the former residence of designer and famed architect Philip Johnson. Found in New Canaan, The Glass House has tours available from May 1st through November 30th, and the drive in from Fairfield is quick.

2. The Barnum Museum

Celebrate the life and work of famed promoter, politician, and showman P.T. Barnum with a visit to the Barnum Museum. Most widely known for conducting hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus, Barnum lived a majority of his final years in Bridgeport, and that's where you'll find this impressive museum. Visit during summertime and experience the Envisioning the Future! exhibit.

3. Museum of Natural and Other Curiosities

Found in a small room on the top floor of the Old State House in Hartford, the Museum of Natural and Other Curiosities will dazzle the mind and boggle the senses. This charming and must-see museum features a wide range of rare, hard to find, and down right weird artifacts. Check out the giant lobster claw, and be sure to take a peek at the two-headed pig – or his nearby friend, the two-headed calf.

4. Muffler Man Cowboy

Across the country, you can find a whole slew of "Muffler Men" – these giant, fiberglass-made statues meant to attract the eye and draw your curiosity. One of the most famous – next to the Paul Bunyan Muffler Man in North Carolina – is the Muffler Man Cowboy, found in Norwich. Standing 22 feet tall, Big Bob, as he is nicknamed, stands as in a local strip mall. Drive in from nearby Groton and have your picture taken with this iconic, giant cowboy.

5. Wadsworth Atheneum

When exploring the sites in historic Hartford, be sure to pull over and embark on a full tour of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Known to be the oldest public art museum in the US, the Wadsworth Atheneum can be found right in the heart of downtown, just minutes from the CT Convention Center, and Interstate 91. This is ideal site for those visitors who love the arts. Make the drive in from nearby Berlin.

6. Mystic Seaport

Accessed most easily from Interstate 95, the Mystic Seaport is another exceptional museum you'll want to make time for. Found in the village of Mystic, not far from Groton, the Mystic Seaport celebrates and documents the history of America and it's deep ties to the sea. Visit in June and check out the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival.

7. Mount Southington Ski Area

There are few better destinations in Connecticut to do some skiing than Mount Southington Ski Area. The ski season at Mount Southington is December through March, so plan your visit to western CT accordingly. Across the 51 skiable acres at Mount Southington, you'll find 14 runs, two terrain parks, and seven chair lifts.

8. Weir Farm National Historic Site

Not far from Bethel in western Connecticut, the Weir Farm National Historic Site celebrates the life of famed American impressionist painter J. Alden Weir – along with a wide range of other artists who lived on the farm. A premier art destination Fairfield County, the Weir Farm NHS hosts impressionist painting workshops (weather permitting) and features guided tours of the Weir House – offered May through October.
